Top 9 ideas for getting ready on the morning of your wedding

For most brides, the morning of the wedding can be a nerve-wracking, emotional experience over a few hours before heading out to the wedding ceremony. This can also be a mad fun time full of laughter with your besties often starting with opening a bottle of bully stuff to get you through those nerves.

1. What to wear

Planning what to wear doesn’t just apply to your beautiful dress. Think about what you want everyone to be in during bridal prep.

I can think of quite a few wedding parties that have only brought their favorite Scooby-doo pajamas to get ready in, only to realise that these beloved PJs are about to be captured for all to see in the wedding gallery. Which is not a problem if you love that joyful style, but some it can be not what they are wanting.

I like to advise my brides to make sure they and their bridesmaids wear something they are happy to be photographed in.

At the end of the day, the more comfy you all feel the more relaxed you will be when the photos are being taken, trust me this will show in the photos.

It doesn’t have to be a silk gown, although they do look fab. It could be that you treat yourself to a set of beautiful but simple white pyjamas. Just another excuse to go shopping ladies.

2. Consider Lighting!

You most probably will have several people in your bridal party, and you will all want to get ready together. Its just more fun together isn’t it?, girls like a good laugh, not to mention getting into trouble together.

When planning where to get ready, it’s essential to have plenty of space near, ideally near windows/natural light or somewhere with make-up stations.

Often the makeup artist will want to take root near the natural window light and there for everyone else will want a nice light area to do their makeup if the makeup artist is not doing everyone’s makeup. This is also essential for great photos with great light. The photographer may close blinds and curtains to narrow the light coming in for some of the more dramatic lightings looks here and there. But for the most part will look for the natural light for most of the photos as they naturally unfold.

3. Clutter

Once you have a room full of your bridal party, friends, and family not to mention the suppliers that are there to help you in the morning, things will start to get chaotic, to say the least.

Think about all your bags, supplies and other stuff. Try to designate an area for things to be put so they can be not a tripping hazard and also wont be in your photos. Again as a photographer, I will want to move things out of the night lighting areas so your photos don’t seem unprofessional and full of clutter.

Also, we all know a messy room makes us all feel Anxious, so we don’t want to add extra stress to our big day.

4. Avoid wet flowers

Your flowers will of course look supper fab, but make sure they are removed from water at least 30 minutes before you will be carrying them around. This is due to the stems can hold a lot of water and we don’t want any moisture dripping on your dresses, this could stain.

5. Play dress up before the wedding day

It can be a task and a half to get into your wedding dress so we need to consider who is going to be helping you with it.

It’s something that can be forgotten about until the last minute, but make sure the people you need to help you stays with you right up until you’re about to walk down the aisle.

Maybe have a girl’s night in and have some fun practicing putting the dress on, that way everyone knows their role and how long it will take to achieve this. But make sure you put the wine down somewhere not near the dress, accidents can happen.

You could bring those who will be helping you put in on, to collect the dress with you, as the bridal shop will often talk you through how it goes on and how to pin the skirt up.

Possibly the hardest dresses to do up are the ones with small buttons on the back, especially if your chosen person has long nails.

6. … And get it on early!

I’d recommend aiming to be in your wedding dress 30 to 45 minutes before you are due to leave for the ceremony. This way if you aim for this time, if there is a delay you won’t feel rushed.

It also means you will have a little time for some group photos together with you all looking amazing and a chance for another drink or two to settle the nerves.

7. Earrings made easy

If you don’t often wear earrings then it’s worth trying them before the day, to see how fiddly they will be to get on and to make sure they are not catching on your vail.

As this could be very annoying to you if you are constantly having your vail court on them, and having to un-tangle your earrings with the vail throughout the day.

8. Make-up mistake

Some makeup can have SPF in them which can reflect light, this means with the use of flash photography it can mean your tones are off compared to the rest of your body and really show in the photos.

Well worth asking the makeup artist on what they are using, most makeup artists understand the impact of flash and can reduce this risk, but if you are doing your own makeup or have a less experiences makeup artist who has not worked with photography before this can be one worth checking.

Consider having your engagement session or a pre-wedding photoshoot after you have had your makeup trial to see how things come out.

9. Remember your essentials

It’s easy to forget something on the day, so well worth creating an essentials bag, you can do this ahead of the wedding day so you are all prepared. Include things such as makeup for touch ups, medical mag like plasters etc. hair clips, wet wipes and so on.
